Covid -19 is here to stay in this world and we are learning to live with it. More than 50% of covid circulating globally is due to Omicron variants BA.4/5 where cases are milder and hospitalization is much less than with the previous variants. Nepal has diagnosed close to a million cases from the beginning, but cases have significantly declined with less than 50 cases being reported in the past several weeks. Most Nepalis (>80%) are fully vaccinated with 2 shots of covid vaccine and booster shots are being given right now.
Nepal Government has begun inoculating children aged 5-11 years with Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine. As per the Ministry of Health and Population, the campaign of vaccinating children has been devised into two phases. During the first phase, the Nepal Government will provide vaccines to the 27 districts whereas the remaining 50 districts will receive the vaccines in the second phase. The first phase started on June 23 and will continue till June 29. The same group will receive the second dose starting from July 18 till July 24. Likewise, the second phase is set to begin on August 21 and will go on till August 27. The same group will receive the second dose starting from September 12 till September 17.
Flights to and from Nepal have increased dramatically and internal flights are operating in full swing. Travelers entering Nepal must submit a certificate showing a full dose of vaccination against COVID-19. Travelers who do not have such certificate will have to submit the certificate showing negative report of COVID-19 test done within the last 72 hours of starting the journey. Such certificate will not be mandatory for children below 5 years of age. All foreign nationals with a certificate of complete vaccination against COVID-19 or a negative certificate of the COVID-19 test will be eligible to obtain on-arrival visa except for nationals from certain countries who need to arrive with a visa (https://www.immigration.gov.np/)
Vaccinated people should continue to take safety precautions, such as wearing a mask and avoiding close contact (within about 6 feet, or 2 meters) with others, when they are in public or visiting with people who are unvaccinated and at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19.
